Wood

About the Wood Shop:

The Pratt Architecture Woodshop is the creative epicenter of Higgins Hall, where there is a cross pollination of all model production.  The student user will find both a place to share their current task or learn from fellow architecture students.  Pratt encourages the construct of physical models, a step critical in the design process. The use of the wood shop allows for a physical experimentation that compliments digital design.  The Woodshop invariably provides an essential component of a production sequence.

The Woodshop is equipped with the traditional compendium of machines; band saws, sanders, chop saws, panel saws, etc.  There is also an extensive collection of hand tools. As we develop new types of digital processes, it becomes apparent how critical analog methods of construction are in furthering experimentation. Things produced physically in the wood shop are an expression of the material itself. Through model making and material testing, students learn firsthand if a structure designed in a no-gravity digital environment could feasibly work in the environment we inhabit. As architects, we are trained to be problem solvers, exposed to many methods of thinking and working, and the wood shop serves as the most versatile tool the Pratt community can use to fabricate solutions.
